Building a cultural district in Hong Kong was proposed in 1988. In 2016, the first phase of construction of the West Kowloon Cultural District was completed. Then, other new facilities were also completed later. The West Kowloon Cultural District, covering an area of about 40 hectares, is equipped with places for performances and exhibitions, an outdoor green area, and restaurants. Its major facilities include Art Park, Freespace, M+, Xiqu Centre, and Hong Kong Palace Museum. It is a new destination for leisure in Hong Kong.

Visitors can first reach the Elements by the MTR Kowloon Station Exit C, then follow the signs to reach the flyover on the second floor and take the lift to M+ on the first floor.
M+ whose full name is Museum Plus is the first global museum of modern and contemporary visual art in Asia. It includes 17,000 square metres of exhibition space across thirty-three galleries, three cinema houses, the Mediatheque, the Research Centre, and restaurants. M+’s collection includes Hong Kong visual culture, moving image, visual art, and design and architecture. Its collection has over 5,000 items. Unlike other museums, visitors are required to make reservations in advance. If you are interested, remember to complete the reservation first in case you are not allowed to enter M+.

Short comments:
The M+ collection is a compendium, encompassing installation art, post-modernism, and design and architecture. Visitors who are interested in different artworks cannot miss it.
Except for artwork exhibitions, M+ also has an artistic area for visitors to do their own artwork. Some of their artworks will be on exhibition.
M+’s staff will offer to help visitors. They can ensure you a comfortable visit with their professional guides.
Hint:
Backpacks and suitcases are not permitted in the galleries, but small bags like the waist bag are not included. Visitors may check their belongings using the locker.

West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade
West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade is near the sea. Visitors can walk along the trail to enjoy the views of Victoria Harbour, or rest on the grassland. Freespace is in the centre of the Art Park. It has indoor and outdoor places for performances and has a seating capacity of 10,000 plus.

Short comments:
Compared with other waterfront promenades, West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade is featured with no railings. Visitors can enjoy the splendid views more clearly. Outdoor teahouses are available at some sections of the trail and visitors can enjoy afternoon tea with the sea view.
As the trail is great for road biking, the road may not be smooth. Wheelchair users may feel uncomfortable about this.
Except for the promenade, there are spacious rest areas where visitors can have a picnic.

Hong Kong Palace Museum
The Hong Kong Palace Museum is the newest cultural facility of the West Kowloon Cultural District. It presents many priceless treasures from the Palace Museum. The museum covers an area of about 10,000 square metres with 6 floors including 9 galleries, an auditorium with a seating capacity of up to 400, atriums, and platforms. The Hong Kong Palace Museum provides ample rest areas where visitors can rest and chat. It also provides an array of amenities including learning spaces, an auditorium, a gift shop, and dining areas.

Short comments:
The Hong Kong Palace Museum presents many priceless treasures from the Palace Museum. It has many galleries and visitors can spend the whole afternoon enjoying the exhibitions.
Except for traditional treasures, the museum also presents modern artworks to show the history of the Palace Museum.
There are viewing platforms on the two floors where visitors can enjoy the views of the West Kowloon Cultural District and Victoria Harbour.
Hint:
It is not convenient to use the lifts outside the museum because the buttons on the lift are too high.
In the outside car park, three are three parking spaces designated for the disabled but remember they are charged by hours.

Xiqu Centre
The Xiqu Centre is the first project to be completed in the West Kowloon Cultural District. It occupies 13,800 square metres. The building is like a lantern, and the egg-shaped theatre is on the top floor of the building. The use of arched openings makes the wall of the theatre smoother. The Xiqu Centre has two theatres, a Tea House Theatre, and a Hanging Garden. The atrium has a podium, public rest areas, and shops.
The Xiqu Centre is established with the goal of performing Chinese opera. The Grand Theatre has a seating capacity of 1,000 plus and the Tea House Theatre’s seating capacity is up to 200. Different opera performances are presented throughout the year, and it is a must-visit place for Cantonese opera lovers.

Short comments:
Several lifts to different floors are available in the Xiqu Centre and the signs are clear. The height of consulting desks is suitable for wheelchair users, so it is convenient. Cantonese opera is closely related to tea-drinking culture, so there are many shops related to tea in the Xiqu Centre including traditional Chinese tea and handshake drink.
Hint:
A lift to Austin Station is available in the Xiqu Centre, so it is quite convenient.

Elements
Elements are located at 1 West Austin Road, West Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is within the Union Square of Kowloon Station. It is a large shopping mall in Hong Kong under the International Commerce Centre. The building has 4 floors and is divided into five areas by the Chinese five elements: Gold, wood, water, fire, and soil. There is a cinema, various restaurants, and ice skating rinks in the mall.

Short comments:
The electronic guide in Elements clearly shows the position of toilets for the disabled, service counters, and lifts. It also shows the routes to nearby spots including MTR stations and the West Kowloon Cultural District. It is convenient for wheelchair users to use the electronic guide because the height of the text on the screen is adjustable.
