On the north bank of Ap Lei Chau sits the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, where tourists can take the ferry among fishing boats. With a population of nearly 90,000 and an area of only 1.3 square kilometres, Ap Lei Chau has a population density of over 70,000 persons per square kilometre. Therefore, it also holds a world record for being the second most densely populated island in the world, after Santa Cruz del Islote, an island in Colombia.

Short comments:
Ap Lei Chau Municipal Services Building has three lifts with enough space for wheelchairs to turn around. One of these lifts is specially used as a priority for the disabled. The counter of the booking centre in the sports centre on the first floor is at the height accessible to wheelchair users. Wheelchairs can be completely parked under the counter. Maps on each floor clearly indicate the location of the facilities. On the whole, the facilities in the Municipal Services Building are quite friendly to the disabled.

Hint:
Due to lack of space, wheelchair users have to enter the stall next door to open the stall door in the toilet of the library on the fifth floor. It’s advised that wheelchair users go to the toilet of the sports centre on the first floor.

Wind Tower Park

Head north from the Municipal Services Building to Ap Lei Chau Waterfront Promenade, and head west along the promenade to Wind Tower Park. Located on the north bank of Ap Lei Chau, the park is themed fishing harbour. Citizens can relax here and experience the traditional custom of fishing harbour in Hong Kong. The park is named after its distinctive landmark, the Wind Tower. The Wind Tower is a 10-metre viewing platform shaped like a traditional fishing boat. Tourists can enjoy the view of Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter from the tower. The colour of the tower’s electronic display lamp changes in accordance with the wind speed, from green when it’s windless to red. The gallery on the waterfront next to the Wind Tower mainly introduces the development of Hong Kong’s fishing and shipbuilding industry, as well as the living customs of fishermen, which is worth visiting.

There’s a floating pier nearly on the opposite of Marina Habitat in the park, where ferries shuttle between Ap Lei Chau and Aberdeen for the convenience of residents on the island.

Every year, the cherry blossom season lasts from late March to early April, during which many tourists are attracted to come to enjoy the beauty of cherry blossom.

Short comments:
Wheelchair users can hardly enjoy the view of Aberdeen due to the high stone railings along Wind Tower Park, which can block their vision.

The park is quiet, suitable for walking, enjoying the nature, or sitting in the plaza to chat with friends. Occasionally there are some activities held or groups performing. Many visitors take their pets for a walk there and then go to the Ap Lei Chau Market to buy some food. Close to the MTR station, the park is a popular open space for nearby residents.

Hint:
Tourists who’d like to visit the Wind Tower should note that the tower will remain closed for the short term since the lift project between the tower and the adjacent footbridge have not been finished yet.

Both Ap Lei Chau Waterfront Promenade and Wind Tower Park have an accessible toilet, respectively located next to the Hung Shing Temple and the gallery of Ap Lei Chau near the Wind Tower.
